Introduction
In this article we will discuss about the topic “Is real estate or Stock market better for inflation hedge?”.
Inflation as we all know is an enemy to money. It tends to eat up the value of money even before it arrives into your bank account.
When we talk about real estate and stock market what comes to mind is investment. And investment is a strategy put in place on other to beat inflation. But now we are at a point when we need to choose between real estate and stock market to know which will be able to beat the inflation hedge perfectly well over time.
Now this will lead us to the sub topic:
What is real estate investment?
Real estate is a branch of the financial market that has to do with housing, rentage, mortgage and property ownership. It can be traded either physically or digitally as an index fund or as a REITs where you need to purchase a share value of an existing real estate company.
When we talk about physical real estate, it has to do with buying into existing / already built homes, property or land at a discounted price hoping to make good money out of it over time when the cost of those physical properties tends to go parabolic when inflation kicks in.
For example a land cost $1000 for 2 hectares as at 2026 and if inflation is to kick in and prices of the market rebalance, the value of that piece of land can go all the way up to $4,000 by a fraction of 3 – 4 years.
Another thing that can influence the appreciation of land property or real estate is fast development of urban areas or even some rural areas. When you purchase a property at a region where development is fast approaching, you will see that the value of property within that location will tend to go up in price.
We can also call this smart investment. The idea of looking out for quick / fast possible opportunities that tend to yield tremendous growth over time. What makes this unique is the fact that the uncertainty behind this investment is minimal.
What is stock market investment?
Stock market investment: This is a financial market that has share of companies that have a Public IPO or share price.
Stock investment has to do with allocating some portion of a portfolio into a particular company, share/stocks, how do I mean? When you buy a share from a company in the stock market that is called stock market investment!
How does this work!
For instance Shell corporation shares sell for $2 and I purchase $2000 worth of it, I tend to buy 1000 units of that company’s shares. That means I now own a share portion of the company. If the company progresses, I progress and vice-versa.
There is usually a market rebalancing when the value of a company currency wants to drop, so many stocks tend to appreciate in price in order to balance up in value.
What are the things that drive the upside of a stock price.
- Inflation Rebalancing
- Exponential growth in yield
- Great market regulation and trust
- Consumer interest spike/hike.
Back to our example, if all this or one of the listed below plays out, you will find out that the $2000 invested may appreciate over time to about $7000 to $10,000 USD in less than 5 years and above.
One major benefit of stocks and share price of companies is that most this company’s usually pay out dividend every half or annually to their stock holders as an effort to reward the stock holder for buying into their shares.
Over time this dividend will tend to increase as the company’s growth increases.
One big advise is that before embarking in buying a stock in the stock market, you need to make in-depth research on that particular stock to see the growth, market sentiment and regulations.
All this will help to guide you in making a better decision on the stock to buy and also how much risk you are willing to put into that share / stock of a company.
Between real estate and stock market which is a better option to beat inflation?
Based on what we have researched so far, I believe the both financial decision if followed with care and in-depth research and findings will yield tremendous result.
The best way to answer this question is based on self strength and information. You need to dwell in your strength and not your weakness. How do I mean? I mean that if you have zero knowledge about real estate and you have in-depth knowledge about stock market, which one do you think will give you good money if you invest your time and money? I guess by now you can answer the question clearly. This does not stop you from researching about other financial markets, but I believe you need to invest in what you know and understand very well rather than what you are told to understand. The self effort is also needed to survive inside any market dump or uncertainty.
What is inflation hedge?
Inflation hedge in layman understanding is when a currency funds to depreciate in value due to the following:
- Central Bank rebalancing its currency value to meet the demand in the economy.
- Too much printing of fiat money making it too accessible.
- Bad economy due to poor governmental system.
We can also say inflation hedge is an investment or asset meant to protect your money from losing its buying power when prices go up.
Common Examples:
- Gold
- Real Estate
- Commodities
- TIPS (Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities)
Overall Overview of Inflation with relation to financial markets
Inflation is a general rise in prices that reduces currency purchasing power and directly alters asset valuations, borrowing costs, and market returns.
Core Concepts of Inflation
- Demand-Pull: Prices rise when consumer demand outpaces available product supply.
- Cost-Push: Prices increase because production inputs like raw materials and labor become more expensive.
- Measurement: Central banks track changes using indices like the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
Impact on Financial Markets
Interest Rates:
Central banks raise short-term interest rates to cool down high inflation. Higher rates increase borrowing costs for businesses and consumers.
Stock Markets:
Rising discount rates lower the present value of future corporate earnings, which can depress stock valuations.
Bond Markets:
Existing fixed-rate bonds lose market value when new bonds offer higher yields to match current inflation levels.
Alternative Assets:
Investors often shift capital toward tangible assets like real estate, commodities, and gold devaluation.
Conclusion
In conclusion, investments tend to be the only way out to keep up with your purchasing power. If money is saved without investing, the value of that money tends to drop in value as inflation grows.
So therefore, investing is a skill that needs to be developed. Find the right niche and make better research about it, check past and present date, if need be, you can consult a financial expert before proceeding to invest your money into it.
