Varo
- Cash Advance: $20 to $250 to start; up to $700 over time
- Speed: Instant (no extra fee)
- Fees: Flat fee of $1.60–$100 per advance, depending on the amount and your deposits
- Our Rating: 4.3 / 5
You can access your paycheck more quickly with Varo, an online banking service. Your paycheck appears in your Varo account as soon as your employer transfers it, up to two days ahead of your scheduled payday, if you use direct deposit.
You can qualify for Varo Advance once you have a Varo account and fulfilll the deposit requirements. You can accumulate up to $700 over time by establishing eligible direct deposits and making timely repayments, with starting limits ranging from $20 to $250. In contrast to the majority of cash advance apps, Varo does not charge a subscription fee, request tips, or impose an additional instant-transfer fee; instead, your advance is deposited into your Varo account as soon as it is approved.
Although it is transparent and flat, the fee structure is contingent upon your deposits. A $500 advance at Varo costs $40 if you receive $800 or more in qualifying deposits each month. The same advance costs $100 without them. Additionally, you have more flexibility than most competitors by being able to select your own repayment date, which can be anywhere between 15 and 30 days out.
Notable Features
- Varo’s secured credit card: If you’re attempting to raise your credit score, the Varo Believe Card may be of assistance. When you move funds from your Varo bank account to your Varo secured account, the balance becomes your card’s limit, ensuring that you can always make full payments.
- Submissions to the Credit Bureau: Varo helps raise your credit score by reporting timely payments to the three main credit bureaus. The Varo app’s credit monitoring feature allows you to monitor your progress.
- Extra features include: the ability to deposit cash at participating CVS locations, use remote check deposit, transfer money to others for free, and access a vast network of fee-free ATMs.
Note:
Early access to direct deposit funds depends on the timing of payer’s submission of deposits. Varo generally posts such deposits on the day they are received, which may be up to 2 days earlier than the payer’s scheduled payment date. Bank Account Services provided by Varo Bank, N.A. Member FDIC. Visa® Debit Card is issued by Varo Bank, N.A. pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc and may be used everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted.
Tilt (formerly Empower)
- Cash Advance: Up to $500
- Speed: Instant (free to a Tilt debit card; fee to other accounts) or free next-day standard delivery
- Fees: $8/month after a 14-day free trial for new customers
- Our Rating: 4.3 / 5
In August 2025, Empower Finance changed its name to Tilt to reflect its growth into a wider range of credit products. With a flat $8/month subscription following a 14-day free trial for new users, the core cash advance feature functions exactly as it did before: there is no interest, no credit check, and no late fees. However, the advance limit has increased; under the Empower name, qualified users can now borrow up to $500 instead of $250.
Tilt, which uses real-time cash flow analysis to determine eligibility instead of your credit score, says more than 75% of new subscribers qualified for an advance in July 2026. Offers from $10 to $500. First-time customers in the second quarter of 2026 averaged $98, compared with $172 for repeat customers. Free standard shipping, typically arriving the next business day – one of the fastest free options in the category. If you need the money right away, instant delivery (around 15 minutes) to an outside account costs $1 to $8 for advances under $300 and 3% for larger ones.
Tilt is a good option if you want a more comprehensive financial toolkit in addition to the advanced feature because the $8/month subscription also includes AutoSave, credit monitoring, and spend tracking. In addition to the rebranding, Tilt offered non-prime borrowers unsecured cash-back credit cards, which provided an additional avenue for credit development not offered by Empower.
Notable Features
- AutoSave: Tilt knows when to automatically save money into your savings account based on your income and spending habits — no work required.
- Credit Monitoring – See your credit score progress in the Tilt app.
- Tilt Credit Cards: Unsecured cash-back credit cards (from WebBank) for borrowers with limited or recovering credit, rolled out with the August 2025 rebrand.
- No hidden fees. No tip requests, no late fees, and no instant transfer fees if you don’t mind next-day delivery. Advances to a Tilt debit card are no fee, and take about a minute to arrive.
Please note that Tilt is frequently updating its products and features following its 2025 rebrand. Banking services are provided by nbkc bank, Member FDIC. Cash Advance is not available to residents of Connecticut, Maine, or Washington, D.C.
Dave
- Cash Advance: Up to $500
- Speed: Instant (to Dave account) or 2–3 business days (external ACH)
- Fees: Up to $5/month membership; mandatory overdraft service fee of 5% ($5 min) per advance
- Our Rating: 4.2 / 5
The ExtraCash account from Dave is an online banking account — you can use its overdraft feature to give yourself a no-interest advance of up to $500.
In 2025, Dave’s fee structure changed significantly. Dave stopped its optional tips in early 2025 after federal regulators sued the company in November 2024 over its fees and marketing (the Justice Department’s case is still ongoing). Instead, you pay a mandatory overdraft service fee of 5% of the amount of the advance, with a minimum of $5. Since then, Dave has eliminated its old $15 cap on fees for new members and most existing members (the rest now have a $20 cap), so a $500 advance can cost $25. Added to that is a monthly membership fee of up to $5.
Transfers to your Dave Checking account are instant and free. Sending funds to an external debit card costs an optional 1.5% fee and arrives within an hour, while external ACH transfers are free and take 2–3 business days.
Not all members qualify for ExtraCash, and few qualify for the $500 maximum. Advances start at $25, and Dave weighs the recurring deposits and balance in your linked account, plus whether you’ve repaid past advances on time and in full.
Notable Features
- Automatic Calculations: Dave automatically calculates when your advance repayment will come out of your account — usually your next payday. If you can’t pay the full balance, Dave runs partial settlements instead and doesn’t charge a late fee.
- Pay Back Early: You can also opt to pay your Dave advance back early.
- Early Pay: Set up direct deposit to your Dave Checking account and you can get your paycheck up to two business days early.
Albert
- Cash Advance: $25 to $1,000 (few qualify for the max)
- Speed: Instant to your Albert Cash account
- Fees: Draw fee on each advance, based on the amount; no subscription required; optional plans cost $19.99–$39.99/month
- Our Rating: 4.6 / 5
Albert is a mobile-first financial app that can identify you from your next paycheck with its no-interest cash advance feature, Albert Instant. FinWise Bank now offers Instant as an unsecured line of credit, and depending on the amount you borrow, Albert may impose a draw fee each time you take out an advance.
You can obtain a cash advance from Albert without having to pay a monthly fee, in contrast to many of its rivals. Although few users are eligible for the maximum, advance limits range from $25 to $1,000. The app displays any draw fees before you confirm, and funds immediately appear in your Albert Cash account. Keep in mind that in order to access advances, you must have an Albert Cash account and set Smart Money to the “Automatic” schedule.
Instant has no interest or late fees, and Albert doesn’t perform a hard credit check. Repayment is due on a predetermined date, and you have the option to pay it manually through the app or automatically with autopay.
Optional subscriptions start at $19.99/month for the Standard plan, which adds investing, cash back on your debit card, credit monitoring, identity protection, and fee-free in-network ATM withdrawals. Genius ($39.99/month) adds an AI-powered financial assistant — but neither plan is needed just to get an advance.

Genius ($39.99/month) adds an AI-powered financial assistant — but neither plan is needed just to get an advance.
Notable Features
- Cash back on Albert debit card purchases with a paid plan, including up to 20% on groceries and up to 10% on gas
- Automated savings on a custom schedule that fits your needs
- Guided or DIY investing — pick your own stocks and themes or have Albert do it for you
- No minimum balance fees or commissions
Brigit
- Cash Advance: $25 to $500, depending on eligibility
- Speed: Instant (Express Delivery) or standard (1–3 business days)
- Fees: $8.99/month (Plus) or $15.99/month (Premium); no plan required if you request an advance by email
- Our Rating: 4.1 / 5
Brigit is arguably the most open payday advance app. The Plus plan costs $8.99 per month, while the Premium plan costs $15.99 per month. The pricing structure is simple. However, a plan is not necessary. According to Brigit’s terms, qualified members can email the company to request an advance without one. According to Brigit, most members are eligible for $50 to $100, but advances can range from $25 to $500 depending on eligibility ($25 to $250 in Maine). Both plans have zero percent interest, no origination fees, no late fees, and no tips. Depending on when you request it, standard delivery is free and takes one to three business days to arrive. Instant delivery (usually within 20 minutes) is available via Express Delivery — Plus members pay a fee of up to $5.99 for it, while Premium members get it free.
You get to choose your repayment date, which is usually your next payday. If you need more time, Brigit offers free repayment extensions, if requested at least three business days before your payment date.
But Brigit doesn’t give cash advances to just anyone. You will need to meet the following requirements:
Brigit App Requirements
- Before Brigit gives you an advance, you must demonstrate that you have received at least three paycheck direct deposits from the same source. Paper checks, ATM deposits, and sporadic direct deposits are not included.
- You must have a checking account with a balance greater than zero that is at least sixty days old. In order for Brigit to safely collect your payment without overdrawing your account, you must also demonstrate a sufficient end-of-day balance on your payday.
- Brigit Score. Brigit assigns each prospective member a score that is comparable to a credit score. It is determined by your income, expenses, and banking habits. The app indicates the minimum score required to be eligible for cash advances; the score ranges from 0 to 100.
- Credit-builder feature: Save as little as $1 per month while establishing credit with a credit-builder installment loan that reports to all three credit bureaus (available only in the Premium package).
EarnIn
- Cash Advance: Up to $150/day; up to $1,000/pay period
- Speed: 1–3 business days (free) or instant via Lightning Speed (fee starting at $3.99)
- Fees: No subscription; optional tips; optional Lightning Speed fee
- Our Rating: 5 / 5
ActiveHours, now known as EarnIn, was the first payroll advance app.
Its founder, Ram Palaniappan, claims that by assisting employees in escaping the pay cycle that stunts their income, it aims to create a more equitable financial system.
Since you are withdrawing wages you have already earned rather than borrowing against future income, EarnIn refers to its service as earned wage access (EWA) rather than a cash advance. There are no required fees or interest charges. The daily limit for new users is usually lower (EarnIn reports that new members start at about $85 per day on average), but as you gain experience with the app, it can increase to $150 per day. $1,000 is the maximum for each pay period.
Both a subscription fee and a required tip are absent. Although optional tips are welcome, they never impact the quality or scope of your services. Lightning Speed transfers cost between $3.99 and $8.99, depending on the amount, if you need money in a matter of minutes. Standard transfers are free and take one to three business days.
Note: EarnIn’s daily limit is capped at $100 for New York residents.
- Balance Shield: Overdraft protection alerts and custom auto-transfers from your earned pay when your balance drops below a set threshold
- Early Pay: Get your paycheck deposited up to two days earlier than your scheduled payday for a $2.99 fee
- Credit Monitoring: Track your VantageScore 3.0 from Experian for free in the app
MoneyLion
- Cash Advance: Up to $500 (up to $1,000 with a MoneyLion Spend account and qualifying direct deposits)
- Speed: Up to five business days (free) or instant via Turbo delivery (fee)
- Fees: No mandatory subscription for Instacash; Turbo delivery fees vary by amount and where you send it (MoneyLion’s example: $4.99 to get a $40 advance instantly)
- Our Rating: 4.2 / 5
MoneyLion is another online banking app that provides early access to paychecks and cash advances.
You can borrow up to $500 without a credit check or interest thanks to its Instacash feature. If you pay a Turbo fee, the money will appear in your account in a matter of minutes; otherwise, it can take up to five business days. Up to $1,000 is available to users who open a MoneyLion Spend account and set up eligible recurring direct deposits. However, because MoneyLion caps the amount you can receive in a single disbursement, it may take multiple draws to reach the full amount, each of which has a Turbo fee if you need the money quickly.
Additionally, you can access your paycheck up to two days ahead of schedule with its MoneyLion Spend account.
Notable Features
- Spending and Financial Management Interface: MoneyLion provides a low-cost investing platform with a comprehensive spending and money management interface that enables you to create a portfolio of exchange-traded funds tailored to your risk tolerance, including options for socially conscious investing.
- No Management Fees: There are no minimum balance requirements or management fees associated with your investment account. However, depending on how much you invest, the investment account itself is subject to a tiered monthly administration fee of $1 to $5.
- Credit Builder Plus: You can borrow up to $1,000 and repay it over a 12-month period for $19.99 a month. APRs vary based on your credit score, ranging from 5.99% to 29.99%. With consistent, on-time payments, the plan can establish a good credit history and offers free credit monitoring.
Chime MyPay
- Cash Advance: Up to $500 (some members qualify for up to $1,000)
- Speed: Within 24 hours (free) or instant (3% fee, $2 minimum/$5 maximum)
- Fees: No subscription, no interest, no tips
- Our Rating: 4.5 / 5
One of the most user-friendly cash advance options is Chime MyPay. There are no required fees, not even a monthly subscription. MyPay allows you to access up to $500 of your next paycheck before it arrives if you already bank with Chime. The money is deposited into your Chime checking account for free within a day. Do you need it sooner? A minimum of $2 and a maximum of $5 per advance are required for instant delivery, which costs 3% of the advance amount.
Chime looks at your checking account history to determine your eligibility. Generally, you need an activated Chime debit card and two qualifying direct deposits of $200 or more within the last 36 days (one may be sufficient in some circumstances). There is no need for a credit check. The majority of new users begin with a $40–$100 limit, which can increase to $500 depending on your deposit history. Some members are eligible for up to $1,000. Repayment occurs automatically upon the arrival of your subsequent direct deposit.
Check the app to see if you are eligible where you live because MyPay isn’t available in every state. Keep in mind that you cannot link an external bank to receive the advance; you must have an active Chime checking account.
Notable Qualities
- SpotMe: After you receive $200 or more in qualifying direct deposits each month, Chime’s fee-free overdraft protection automatically covers you up to $200 on debit card purchases and ATM withdrawals. When money is tight, you have two layers of protection because it works with MyPay.
- Get Paid Early: Chime clients who make qualifying direct deposits may get paid up to two days ahead of schedule.
- No tip prompts: Unlike many competitors, Chime doesn’t ask for optional tips, removing the social pressure to pay more.
- Full banking suite: Chime offers checking, a high-yield savings account, and a credit builder card — all with no monthly fees or minimum balance requirements.
Chime is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., Members FDIC. The Chime Visa® Debit Card is issued by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A. pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. and may be used everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. The secured Chime Visa® Credit Card is issued by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A. pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. and may be used everywhere Visa credit cards are accepted. Please see the back of your Card for its issuing bank.
Early access to direct deposit funds depends on the timing of the submission of the payment file from the payer. We generally make these funds available on the day the payment file is received, which may be up to 2 days earlier than the scheduled payment date.
SpotMe® on Credit is an optional, no interest/no fee overdraft line of credit tied to the Secured Deposit Account. SpotMe on Debit is an optional, no fee service attached to your Chime Checking Account (individually or collectively, “SpotMe”). Eligibility for SpotMe requires $200 or more in qualifying direct deposits to your Chime Checking Account each month. Qualifying members will be allowed to overdraw their Chime Checking Account and/or their Secured Deposit Account up to $20 in total, but may be later eligible for a higher combined limit of up to $200 or more based on member’s Chime account history, direct deposit frequency and amount, spending activity and other risk-based factors. Your SpotMe Limit will be displayed to you within the Chime mobile app. You will receive notice of any changes to your SpotMe Limit. SpotMe for Credit and SpotMe on Debit share a single SpotMe limit. Your SpotMe Limit may change at any time, at Chime or its banking partners’ discretion. Although there are no overdraft fees, there may be out-of-network or third-party fees associated with ATM transactions or OTC cash withdrawal fees at retailers. SpotMe won’t cover non-card transactions, including ACH transfers, Pay Anyone transfers, or Chime Checkbook transactions. SpotMe terms and conditions.

How Cash Advance Apps Work
Although some of these apps (Varo, Albert, and Chime MyPay) structure their advances as bank credit products, the majority of these apps do not technically offer a traditional loan. This cash advance, also known as a paycheck advance, will help you get by until your next paycheck. To put it another way, it’s a method of getting paid a little early for money you’ve already earned or will soon receive, typically without a credit check.
Even though your paycheck is still a few days away, cash advance apps reimburse you for some of the work you’ve already completed this week. For instance, when your next paycheck comes in, the app takes $100 straight out of your checking account to cover the cost of the $100 you need to borrow.
With one significant exception—there is no interest—it functions similarly to a payday loan.
Only the $100 you actually received and any agreed-upon fee are deducted from your paycheck; there is no additional $15 or more in interest. Other revenue streams for the apps include tips, monthly subscription fees, per-advance fees, optional instant transfer fees, and occasionally interchange fees from card transactions.
But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a drawback.
You continue to deduct money from your subsequent paycheck, leaving you with even less money to cover all of your expenses. This causes many people to take another advance before and after their next paycheck. You eventually find yourself in a vicious cycle where you are constantly behind schedule and rely on the app to get through each month.
Taking a pay advance is merely a temporary solution. Your meager salary doesn’t go any farther this month than it did the previous. Use it to cover an unforeseen one-time expense with quick cash. If you consistently fall behind, it’s time to either increase your income or tighten your belt a bit.
Payday Advance App Won’t Lend Enough?
The $100 or $250 you are eligible for on a payday advance app may not always be sufficient to cover all of your costs. A payday loan isn’t the greatest way to get the assistance you require, even in this case.
Compared to a payday loan, which is due in one lump sum, a personal loan has significantly lower interest and more manageable payments.
Personal loans are available from banks, credit unions, internet lenders, and peer-to-peer lenders such as Prosper. Before granting you a loan, the lender checks your credit. Certain personal loans, known as secured loans, also call for collateral, like a car or money in your bank account. Although they typically have higher interest rates, unsecured loans do not require collateral.
Personal loans can range from several hundred dollars to $100,000, depending on the lender. For borrowers with excellent credit, the lowest advertized rates begin at about 6% APR, which is much lower than the rate on the majority of credit cards.
However, the interest rate on a personal loan could reach 36% if you have bad credit. Additionally, these loans frequently have origination fees, which at some online lenders can be close to 10% of the loan amount. Therefore, make sure that using your credit card would not be less expensive before approving a loan.
Pros and Cons of Cash Advance Apps
Pros
- No interest: None of these apps charges interest on a cash advance, and many charge nothing at all if you can wait a few days for the money.
- No hard credit check: Most apps judge you on your bank account activity and deposits rather than your credit score, so a thin or damaged credit file won’t automatically lock you out.
- Fast funding: Free standard delivery typically takes one to three business days, and most apps can get you the money within minutes if you pay for faster delivery or use the app’s own account.
- Useful extras: Many of these apps bundle early direct deposit, budgeting tools, and credit-building products with their advances.
Cons
- Fees add up: Subscriptions, per-advance fees, and express delivery fees can make a small advance expensive. Varo, for example, charges $20 to advance $100 if you don’t get qualifying deposits at Varo.
- Small starting limits: The advertised maximums are for established users, and most people start far lower. Brigit says most members qualify for $50 to $100, and Tilt’s average first offer was $98 in the second quarter of 2026.
- A smaller next paycheck: Repayment comes straight out of your next deposit, which can leave you short again and start a cycle of repeat advances.
- Strings attached: Many apps require recurring direct deposits or a checking account with months of history, and some make you open their own account to get an advance (Current, Varo, Chime, Dave, and Albert all do).
- Not available everywhere: Several apps exclude certain states. Current’s Paycheck Advance isn’t offered in Connecticut, Maryland, Nevada, Wisconsin, or Washington, D.C., and Tilt’s cash advance isn’t available in Connecticut, Maine, or Washington, D.C. Chime MyPay isn’t offered in every state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you still have concerns about apps that advance paychecks? Regarding what they are (and aren’t) and how they operate, these are some responses to rather frequent queries.
Is a Paycheck Advance a Loan?
The way the product is constructed determines this. Many cash advance apps portray their advances as something other than a loan, and the majority don’t charge interest or perform a hard credit check. However, some are set up as credit (Chime MyPay and Albert Instant are both credit lines), and authorities are still at odds over the remaining ones. According to federal lending law, certain earned wage access products are not credit, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in December 2025. However, the states are not required to follow that advice. Many of these products are treated as loans in California and Connecticut, and they are governed by earned wage access laws in an increasing number of other states. Either way, the lack of interest is an important and positive contrast with payday loans, which infamously charge ridiculously high interest rates that trap borrowers in cycles of debt.
Some apps charge subscription fees to cover the cost of extra services, and paycheck advances frequently have one-time fees. However, paying interest on a paycheck advance—and most definitely not on an early direct deposit—is not a good idea.
What’s the Difference Between a Paycheck Advance and Early Direct Deposit?
A partial advance on your subsequent paycheck is known as a paycheck advance. It is reimbursed when you get paid, whether or not there is a fee. It usually arrives one to two weeks ahead of time, but it can happen at any time during your pay period.
Your entire paycheck is deposited early through early direct deposit. It should not be subject to a fee and does not require repayment. It usually arrives two to four business days ahead of your pay date, which is closer than a paycheck advance.
How Much Does a Cash Advance Cost?
It depends on the service you’re using. A paycheck advance can cost anywhere from nothing (Current’s free delivery within three days, Chime MyPay’s free 24-hour option, EarnIn’s standard transfers) to a monthly subscription of up to $15.99, plus optional instant transfer fees. Some apps charge a mandatory fee on every advance. Varo charges a flat fee per advance with no subscription, Dave charges 5% of each advance on top of a membership fee of up to $5 a month, and Albert charges a draw fee.
Usually, instant advances are more expensive. Depending on the advance amount and the app’s fee structure, the majority of apps that provide instant delivery charge between $1 and $15 per transfer. To determine your actual cost for the advance amounts you’re likely to require, compare apps by looking at both the subscription fee and the instant transfer fees.
Final thoughts
The best cash advance apps provide an affordable and practical way to get money if you need it quickly to cover an unforeseen expense.
But they won’t solve your financial problems in the long run. You require more than a one-time financial boost if you regularly struggle to make ends meet.
You must quit living paycheck to paycheck.
Thankfully, a lot of these apps also assist you with that. To begin with, they assist you in escaping payday lenders and the exorbitant interest they demand. Additionally, they assist you in managing your finances by preventing late or overdraft fees.
Additionally, some payday advance apps provide automated savings tools to help you increase your emergency fund or budgeting tools to help you monitor and control your spending. Many also offer opportunities to supplement your income through side gigs, additional shifts, or cash-back rewards.
With the help of these tools, you won’t need to rely on cash advances to cover those unplanned expenses; you’ll have money in the bank to take care of them.
Methodology: How We Choose the Best Cash Advance Apps
We use several factors to evaluate the cash advance apps on this list. All relate to the overall cost of their services, ease of use, and general applicability for everyday money management needs.
Transfer Speed
When you need money, you need it fast. The best paycheck advance apps offer next-day or same-day (“instant”) transfers. It’s often the case that you have to pay more for an instant transfer, but that’s an acceptable tradeoff when getting your money in two to three business days simply won’t cut it.
Transfer Cost
The best paycheck advance apps charge nothing for standard transfers, which typically clear within three business days. They should also charge nothing for early direct deposit, which usually arrives two business days early but can come up to four business days early in some cases.
Most apps do charge for instant transfers. This revenue stream is crucial to their business models. But all else being equal, we prefer apps that keep those fees low or even waive them altogether.
Many of the apps on this list charge monthly subscription fees or have premium tiers that carry fees. In return, users typically get much more than paycheck advances and, in some cases, feature suites that rival full-service banks.
Perks & Rewards
Again, comprehensiveness is better, so the best paycheck advance apps offer some or all of the following:
- Fee waivers for meeting qualifying activities
- Referral bonuses when you get friends to sign up
- Cash back on eligible debit card purchases
- Interest on checking or savings balances
Account opening bonuses are relatively rare in this space, but they’re out there if you know where to look.
Credit Products & Credit-Building Services
Many paycheck advance apps are designed for new-to-credit users and people rebuilding their credit for one reason or another. The best options offer products and services to help, including credit-builder loans, secured credit cards, and free credit scores
